For the second year Studio5 is honored to be one of the venue hosts of the Chi-Town Jazz Fest. Artists and venues donate proceeds to support hunger relief in Chicago. 8:00 Third Stream: Ukranian Folk Music meets Jazz
The brilliant Argentinian pianist, Leandro Lopez Varady, has a deep love of both jazz and classical music, and has worked with Orbert Davis’ Chicago Jazz Philharmonic to develop new “Third Stream” music (which combines elements of both disciplines). When he was recently introduced to a collection of Ukrainian folk songs, the melodies spoke to him in a profound way, and he has infused them with jazz and Latin harmonies and rhythms. The inspiring result is true 21st Century World Music, both unique and beautiful. This work was premiered in 2019 at the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art (UIMA).

The last time we heard the extraordinarily talented, passionate vocalist Dee Alexander at Studio5, she was fronting the Metropolitan Jazz Octet, surrounded by horns and a string section. It was spellbinding. This time Dee will be joining forces with legendary guitarist, John McLean, in a tight new quintet they simply call “The Alexander/McLean Project”. Come hear these stellar artists, up close and personal, performing just for you in the cozy confines of Studio5.
