About Some Like It Hot: “We wanted to do a comedy out of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.”
That’s Billy Wilder explaining the genesis of what is routinely hailed as the greatest comedy ever made, in Cameron Crowe’s excellent book “Conversations With Wilder”. Who am I to argue? Jack Lemmon was never funnier, Marilyn Monroe demonstrates formidable comedic chops and wears clothes that barely qualify as clothes, and Tony Curtis drives a speedboat backwards and gets his glasses steamed up in the sexiest make-out scene ever committed to film. Did I mention the script is perfect? Billy Wilder directed a handful of the greatest American pictures, but I think this one’s his masterpiece. Fun fact: Tony Curtis’ dialogue as his female persona Josephine was dubbed by the great Paul Frees, who voiced Boris Badenov on the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, among hundreds of other credits. – D.O.
