Jim Cox, bass
Phil Gratteau, drums
The internationally renowned jazz mandolinist returns to Studio5!
It’s no secret that Don Stiernberg is not only a friend of our series, he is my personal best pal. I love the guy and I love his music and for fear of overusing all the superlatives I’ve employed over the years in describing him, I’ll let Don speak for himself about this performance. We are excited to welcome him back to Studio5. – SR
“Lots of shared history in this quartet. Jim and Phil are both alumni of the renowned University of Illinois Champaign/Urbana, also decades of work with Chicago jazz legend Judy Roberts. Always the rhythm section of choice, they appear on several of Don's recordings. When Andy Brown began playing with Don he was the new guitar kid in town. Now more than a decade later he has established himself as an international jazz guitar star and authority, while still remaining the youngest member of the band. Every year a sizable chunk of Don's calendar is devoted to teaching and performing at music camps coast to coast, followed by a hometown concert with his buds in the fall. For the last few years these hometown reunion type shows have been scheduled at Studio 5, the favorite scene for the entire band. This year the boys will not only be "getting the band back together" but also polishing material for their next recording project which they are hoping to begin tracking mid-fall.”
Join us. We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience!
Cash bar, light snacks, free parking right outside. Doors open for cocktails at 7:30.
