Choro de Lá pra Cá is a multi-national trio based in Natal, Brazil and the Chicago area. This talented, soulful group delighted us in a concert at the Whiskey Lounge in 2016. They are currently on their third U.S. tour and we are happy to welcome them for their first performance at Studio5. Choro de Lá pra Cá is comprised of Julie Koidin, a classically trained flutist from the Chicago area specializing in Brazilian genres, Diogo Guanabara, composer, guitarist and mandolinist from Natal, Brazil, and Carlo Padilla, composer, actor, guitarist and vocalist. They met and had their first performance in 2014 during the World Cup in Brazil while Julie was there researching choro music. For those unfamiliar with this infectious style, choro developed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th century with the blending of African and European musical influences into a genre commonly employing happy melodies and quick tempos. For that reason it is considered by some as the “ragtime” of Brazil. It is once again enjoying popularity in Brazil and beyond, and Choro de Lá pra Cá specializes in authentic renditions of classic choro pieces as well as exploring new musical territory of their own. Each band member brings their own musical influences to the group, combining choro, samba, northeastern Brazilian folk traditions, American jazz and classical music into a unique musical stew. The name of their group, by the way, roughly translates as "Choro from here and there" to signify the group's travels back and forth between Brazil and the US. Their first concert, performed in the middle of the sand dunes national park in Natal, Brazil, was an overwhelming success and has led to subsequent performances in both Brazil and the U.S. Please join us for this special concert by a truly unique group, and explore the wonderful musical world of choro!
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! –SR
